Family Background
Fr John Sim is the 2nd eldest in a family of 5 brothers and 2 sisters. His father passed away when he was in primary school.
His mother took care of them while his aunty became the sole breadwinner of the family.
Fr John's was close to his aunty and she was also instrumental in steering him towards the religious life.
Call to the Priesthood
Interestingly, the same words of Christ ("What's the use of gaining the whole world and losing your soul?") that compelled St Francis Xavier to abandon worldly pursuits and take the narrow path to holiness played quite a similar role for Fr John Sim.
These thoughts along with other events in his life slowly but eventually prompted him to pursue a higher calling of service and sacrifice.
Fr John entered the Minor Seminary in 1974. Three years later, he went to the Major Seminary to complete his priestly training.
After his ordination in 1984, he served at the Church of Christ the King for 6 years. Later, he served at Church of St Francis Xavier for the next 14 years before joining our Parish.
Hopes & Aspirations for Our Parish
Asked how he feels about his posting to this Church, he says it's good to be back and be given the opportunity to serve the Parish he grew up in.
Church of the Risen Christ has definitely undergone many changes during his long absence. And some of the people he once knew are no longer around. "It would be nice if they were around" he said, with a tinge of sadness.
Fr John hopes to strengthen further the Community Spirit of the Parish; making us more loving and united with one another.
He is also looking into the idea of conducting a Parish Renewal Experience (PRE) programme, as a form of spiritual renewal exercise for the parish.
Contributions to External Organizations
Outside of the Church of the Risen Christ, Fr John Sim contributes as a member to the Finance Committee of the Archdiocese
Favourite Scripture
He regards the words of Christ "Love one another as I have love you" (John 13:34), as a strong influence on his pastoral approach. These words had been a favourite since his seminary days.
Favourite Food
For health reasons, Fr John avoids spicy food and his daily diet consist mainly of vegetables and fish.
Leisure Activities
Fr John enjoyed collecting stamps and coins during his younger days. He also used to play the guitar, drums and organ during his spare time. (By the way, he was the organist for mass during his seminary days).
However, the responsibilities of shepherding the flock demand much of him and he does not have much time for such activities anymore.
He dreams of going fishing, but regards it as luxury as well. As a consolation, he rears fishes in his office aquarium instead! |
