Reflection: “Know what is essential, and what is not ”
Organised religion often creates customs, rituals and symbols to give expression to their worship. They are good insofar as they help deepen the people's faith.
Unfortunately over a long period of time these man-made rituals can become so elaborate and unwieldy that they cloud the original meaning and intention for which they were created in the first place! Instead of enhancing people's lives, they may hinder and put unnecessary burdens on them.
Instead of bridging differences and promoting truth, they may cause divisions and promote bigotry. The Laws of God are perfect, and always life giving. They work to our good and promote peace, harmony and fairness in relationships. Man-made rules should always fall in line with spiritual laws.
So every time we partake in a ritual, we have to ask ourselves if it is making us kinder, more effective and more faith-filled people.
To quote from the Letter of James: Pure unspoilt religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows when they need it, and keeping oneself uncontaminated by the world.
