Saint Vincent de Paul

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide organization of brotherhood living in faith through action in serving the poor and needy by befriending and providing material and spiritual assistance.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) in our parish has about 20 active members and holds its meetings on every Tuesday (except the 2nd Tue of the month) from 8pm to about 9:30pm. Rosary recitation is held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month either at the grotto or in the homes of our adoptees, known as Friends-in-Need (FINs). Our Spiritual Director, Fr. Loiseau, gives us the spiritual inputs during our weekly meetings and celebrates Mass for us once a quarter. Pot-lucks and fellowship usually follow the quarterly Mass. Retreats and talks are also held regularly for members of SSVP in all the parishes to help them grow in their vocation of helping the poor.

Members are currently divided into 6 teams of 3 to 4 members each, to help the poor in Toa Payoh and parts of Bishan. Depending on the distribution of the FINs in these areas, each team is in charge of 4 to 6 blocks of flats. We visit the FINs to review their situation before deciding whether to continue our aid, deliver rations to the home bounds, gather their response and statistics for planning, visit them at the hospital, etc.

The Society regularly receives applications for aids either directly or via referrals. The teams take turn to investigate these applications by conducting home visits to find out the economic situations of the applicants. Investigation reports are submitted for discussion during the weekly meetings. Distribution of rations and money is carried out during Ration Day – the last Sat of the month. During this time, announcements – such as informing the FINs to submit the school result slips of their children, arrangement for visits to places of interest, Christmas Party, etc – are made.

Of course, members also collect donations from parishioners during the second collection on the First Sunday of each month.

Like all other apostolates, that of SSVP requires sacrifices of time and energy. In return, it provides a good opportunity for members to put their faith into practice and grow in imitation of Christ. We therefore invite you to visit us at, and to come to one of our weekly meetings as an observer. You can then decide whether to join us as a member after 3 months.
