There's must be more to being Catholic than just attending Sunday mass.

Bishan East Neighbourhood Group was started 27 years ago in 1989 by a group of Catholic families who believed that being Catholic is more than just attending Sunday Mass. At that time, our group consisted of families from Blocks 156 to 161, Bishan St 13.

Our first Spiritual Director was Fr James Yeo, followed later in 1991 by Fr Louis Loiseau. Currently, we are privileged to have 2 spiritual directors, Fr. Kamil Kamus and Fr. Loiseau to shepherd us in our spiritual growth.

We used to meet once a month and varied our activities. We prayed the rosary; showed videos with religious themes; had spiritual input by our SDs; reflected on the Bible and the Lenten Booklet; and celebrated Mass in our homes. We also had Christmas parties and Visitation of Churches on Maundy Thursday. We also visited old age homes and even organised trips to Malaysia.

As more Catholic families settled in Bishan East, the Holy Spirit prompted us to reach out to them. Currently we have about 100 Catholics living in Bishan St 13 from Blocks 153 to 178. Now we meet weekly, every Friday.

Our GNCC activities are run on five categories of spiritual growth.

Prayer - We recite the Rosary and the Divine Mercy prayer. We also offer prayers for the sick and families with broken relationships, and attend wakes. During our Friday sessions, we pray as a community of Christians for the members’ intentions and give thanks for the graces and blessings we received. We celebrate Mass in our homes about once a quarter.

Sharing the Word of God - We pray the Bible using the seven steps method to enlighten and nurture our understanding of the Word of God. During the seasons of Advent and Lent, we participate in Advent and Lent sharing, using the booklets prepared by the Archdiocese.

Social Visits & Alms Giving
- GNCC organised trips for our residents to hospitals, homes for the aged or members' homes. The objective of the visits is to provide cheer, companionship and joy to the elderly.

Fellowship - After our Friday meetings, we fellowship over light snacks provided by the host family. Occasionally, we plan family outings to the park to build bonds among our families.

Social Mission - In 2005, Fr Francis Teo from the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostles (“MCSPA”) gave us an insightful talk on missionary work for the village and tribal people in Turkana, Kenya. Since then till 2011, our community have raised money, offered clothes, food and household items for the mission. Some of our community members even visited Turkana, Kenya, and saw for ourselves the harsh living conditions there and the difference our contribution have made in the lives of the people of Turkana.
