Making
healthcare accessible to the low-income, especially the elderly. This
is the inspiration behind the Free Medical Clinic of Church of the
Risen Christ, which was commissioned on Sunday 19 August 2007 during
the 11am mass service.
“We hope that by setting up the clinic, the parish can help
the
needy take care of their health needs,” says Fr John Sim, who
suggested the idea of providing free medical services.
“Similar
services are already available at other parishes. The same can be done
for this (Risen Christ) parish, if there is a real need,”
adds Fr
Sim. He was also instrumental in setting up a similar clinic about 7
years ago for Church of St Francis Xavier (SFX). With the support from
the Parish Pastoral Council, Fr Sim developed the Free Medical Clinic
at Risen Christ Church with key contributions from volunteers Dr Thomas
Seng, Mrs Patricia Lee and Mr John Lee.
With experience from working with Fr Sim in setting up the clinic in
SFX, Dr Seng serves in the Risen Christ clinic as Medical Director.
“The clinic will offer medical assistance for a broad range
of
conditions, from the common cold to follow-up care for chronic
conditions,” says Dr Seng.

He also feels that the clinic can play a
significant role, beyond dispensing medical advice. “God has sent
so many wonderful people and I would like to see everyone grow
spiritually as they reach out to the community,” adds Dr Seng.
Mrs Patricia Lee, a retired nurse, adds, “We are blessed to have
so many volunteers and good support, including the Catholic Nurses
Guild (CNG). Their generosity has helped to boost the number of
nurses.”
The total number of 8 doctors and 35 nurses, of which 8 are from CNG,
will manage 2 sessions a week – Wednesday nights and Sunday
afternoons.
The
clinic will be opened from 7 to 9pm on Wednesdays and 2 to 4pm on
Sundays.
