Feast of Our Lady of Velankanni

5th - 8th September 2007
By Gabriel Sebastian

This year's feast of Our Lady of Velankanni, held from 5 - 8 September 2007 also marked its 35th Anniversary. Devotees, young and old and from all walks of life came to join in the celebration conducted in Tamil. Many in the crowd were from other parishes in Singapore. The celebrant for the masses on all four days was Reverend Father K M Arockiyasami, who is Assistant Priest at the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes.

In a series of homilies, Father Arockiyasami developed the theme of God’s Love with a special focus on Jesus on the Cross. Using simple but striking anecdotes, he said that spiritual healing very often precedes physical healing – a forgiving heart makes it easier for a person to bear the burden of illness resulting in improved mental and physical health.

Parishioners venerated the statue of Our Lady each evening after the Mass. The final day - a Saturday - saw a longer queue. Many devotees, among whom were many non-Tamils, came to thank our Lady for her blessings and prayed for more blessings for the future.
