Risen Christ parishioners not only gathered knowing that Christ is the reason for the season of Christmas, but also experienced it for themselves.
This was possible thanks to two choirs which presented their own gifts to the infant Jesus, through a musical and a concert.
62 children from the Christus Laudatur Voce Choir presented the Risen Christ parishioners with a vibrant and creative musical on Christmas Eve.
Dressed in pyjamas and looking very excited, the children took centre stage at the altar, temporarily transforming the church into a concert hall. From the minute the musical opened, with the main character "Candy Cane Jane" leading, the audience embarked on a cheerful lesson about "Soul Food" and "The Recipe for Life", teaching little hungry hearts the sweet truth that God alone can satisfy His children.
Our holiday Munchkins performed songs in an array of genres ranging from classical, 50s rock, latin calypso, rhythm and blues to traditional Christmas ballads. Of course, there was also a birthday song and a cake for Jesus.
The musical ended to the enthusiastic applause of parishioners, obviously delighted that the spirit of Christmas was captured in such a delectable way.
While the musical put up by the children before the 9pm mass was heartwarming, the Cantate Domino Choir’s rendition of carols before the midnight mass brought a sense of solemnity and wonder to Christmas.
The choir entered the church in a procession while holding lighted candles and singing Silent Night. Their entrance set a contemplative yet joyous mood for the performance.
To add to the festive spirit, the Cantate Domino Choir Ensemble, made up of around 20 members, sang favourites such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Jingle Bells" and "Ding Dong Merrily on High".
A surprise finale prepared everyone for the mass that followed, to celebrate the birth of Christ. Father Valerian Cheong sang a solo in "When a Child is Born", which describes the nativity story in vivid words and tune. The song drew loud cheers and applause from parishioners as the performance brought the segment to a climax.
After the mass, all were treated to light refreshments. It was indeed a night to celebrate at the Church of the Risen Christ, and in churches all around the world!
