December.
To many young people it is a month away from school, a time when we
have a reason to shun work, when deadlines get forgotten and when
“hibernation” is on top of many of our to-do lists. Yet, it
is also the month when we take time to reflect on the year that has
just whizzed past before our eyes, a time when we take time to remember
friends, family and of course, a time when we remember the coming of
Christ.
This December though, became a little more special for those of us who
attended the Youth Mass, which was aptly themed-
“Reawakening”. Held on the very first day of December, the
event was one that was spiritually enriching and enjoyable. As an event
organised by the youth for the youth, elements such as fun had to be
infused into the event. Seemingly serious matters concerning the
Church, such as apologetics was introduced to participants in the
context of a “twister” game. While homosexuality,
pre-marital sex and abortion, all hot topics amongst young people
today, were also discussed to fuel our understanding of the viewpoint
of the Church.
Of course, the highlight of the event was the mass itself. Unlike the
celebration of the mass for the masses, this Youth Mass was more geared
towards young people. Apart from Fr. Val’s homily that
highlighted issues that were closer to the lives of young people, the
mass also had a short skit that illustrated the meaning of Advent,
which was performed by the Indian Catholic Youth Movement. The very
lively choir that was specially formed for the Youth Mass also played a
role in livening up the atmosphere. The event finally reached a climax
and ended with a bang with an extremely hyped up and spiritual finale
of a praise and worship session that was led by the music ministry-
Eternal Dawn.
As we all packed up to leave, saying our goodbyes and each lending a
hand to arrange the pews back into place, a subtle sense of reawakening
has subconsciously crept into our lives this December. Although many
have noted that more could have turned up to share in the joy of the
event, I feel that the event was a success as the success of the Youth
Mass lies not in participation but that God has indeed touched at least
one of our hearts.
I know He has touched mine.
