The Realities of Lent

As children, some of us may not like the season of Lent. With the guidance of our parents we were told to make little sacrifices like not eating our favourite candy or skipping that outing with our friends. Our parents only had our spiritual welfare in mind. Like a good parent, the Church has our spiritual welfare during this season of Lent and today as adults we must rise above our limitations to appreciate its value.

The season of Lent is related to three realities of our faith, with the Paschal Mystery as the first, and through the Paschal Mystery, the Church came into being. From this flows the second, Christian initiation. Lent is an excellent time to introduce new members to the Church.

The third being repentance and renewal, a time to reconcile with God. We should turn our attention to our need for repentance and make plans for to celebrate the sacrament of penance as an important part of our preparation for Easter.

Let us then be ready to receive the gift of Salvation. It is free and for everyone.
