Go for treasures that last!

Speak Lord, Your servant is listening !!

We tend to cling to our possessions. But we are forewarned that all material things – our looks, our properties, our reputations – will soon come to pass.  We have to be faithful to our state in life whether we are single or married.

But even that will one day come to pass because in heaven our age, marital status, and the physical, mental and intellectual qualities we had in our earthly life will be re-set; we will all have new identities as brothers and sisters in the family of God. When we raise our minds to our heavenly inheritance, we will be able to see our present problems with a spiritual perspective.

In that light, it is not difficult to let go of our possessions and all created things to follow Christ. The first apostles were attracted to Jesus because he had an enduring spiritual quality about him. Only spiritual values will remain when everything else comes to nothing.

We would do well to use our time and resources not so much to concentrate on making material gains, as to build on our spiritual capital.

Lay Apostolate Sunday

Lay Apostolate Sunday on 14 August 2011 was celebrated with a lunch at the Singapore Foochow Association. The parishioners arrived at the venue in chartered buses and other means of transport. A slideshow featuring the various ministries was screened before the young comperes, Stacy and Jocelyn, took to the stage with their light hearted banter and jokes.

Fr John Sim led the grace before meal and soon the people tucked into the sumptuous course. The program began with a dance by the Filipino group. With his guitar and husky voice, Fr Kamil gave his rendition of ‘Love, Me’ and ‘Straight From The Heart’. The youth ministry, Eternal Dawn, entertained with various songs – a Hokkien number titled ‘One Million’, ‘Sugar, Sugar’ and a medley of ‘Love In the First Degree’ and ‘Karma Chameleon’.

The two table games were a test of how observant the people are of the luncheon venue and the parish compound. There was much excitement as the people tackled the questions and shared with one another the answers.  The lucky draw rounded up the program for the day and there were smiles all around as good-byes were exchanged at the end of the celebration.
