Repentance And Reconciliation with God and Others
The book of Isaiah foretells the coming of a Spirit-filled Messiah who will judge for the poor with justice and bring forth an era of harmony and peace. In the letter to the Romans, St Paul exhorts all to live in hope of this Old Testament vision by being tolerant and united with one another, following the example of Jesus, thus giving glory to God.
The daily life of a Christian is very much intertwined with the vision in the process of peace and reconciliation. Today’s gospel highlights repentance that leads to reconciliation. St John the Baptist not only preaches the message ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand’, but his lifestyle demonstrates that self-denial is essential to penance. By denying our self-indulgent passions and desires and repenting of our attitudes and sins, we open ourselves up to Jesus and renew our relationship with Him. Let us thus prepare the way for the Lord and make straight His paths through our repentance and reconciliation with Him and with others.
