Slavery
Last Sunday, the Gospel reading said if we hung on to our life, we will lose it. This week, the explanation is clearer, if we are led by the Spirit, we will no longer “yield to self-indulgence”. After all, we have been freed, we have been saved, yet we tend to live as ones who are enslaved. Why do we let ourselves “be fastened again to the yoke of slavery”? We misuse our freedom by choosing only the parts that we are comfortable with, that are convenient, and find all sorts of justifications why we cannot totally follow Christ fully. The call to discipleship for Christ is total, complete, unconditional and requires all our commitment to God. Elisha had to make a complete break without saying goodbye to his parents first. Jesus emphasized this again with the three men he met along the road. Let us not be tied down by the daily trappings of this world that seem so necessary? Can we help each other loosen these knots and eventually break free so we can fully commit ourselves to God?
