To lead is to serve
The Lord appeared to Abraham and he served the three men passing through. St Paul was made a servant of the Church by God to proclaim His message that Christ is in His people. Both Abraham and Paul understood their call to serve and responded. For three years, the apostles were with Christ in His public ministry. They heard Jesus’ sermons and witnessed the many signs and wonders He performed. Yet, the apostles have not understood the way of the Lord and sought for positions in leadership. Jesus gathered them together and taught them an important lesson. The world emphasizes power and authority over others but Jesus sets a different example. “For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) As disciples, we are called to follow in the footsteps of Christ and to be the servant of all others. To be able to lead others, we need to first humble ourselves and serve them.
