Choose life, not death

9 March 2014 ( First Sunday in Lent )

Today’s readings present a picture of contrast. We see two very different reactions to temptation. On the one hand, our first parents Adam and Eve succumbed to temptation and disobeyed God. This disobedience consequently brought about widespread sin and death to the world. On the other hand, our Saviour Jesus resisted temptation and remained faithful to His Father. The fidelity of Christ saved us and gave us new life. In our daily Christian life, we are constantly involved in a struggle. We cannot avoid having to make a choice between sin and holiness, between death and life. By acknowledging and accepting this struggle against temptation, we can then grow towards submitting ourselves to God. We can learn from how Jesus conquered temptation repeatedly and rely on God to help us to resist temptation and avoid sin. In this season of Lent, let us pray for a heart to be able to discern between good and evil so as to make the right choice – choose life, not death.
