11th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Establish the Kingdom of God
The first reading speaks of a ‘tender shoot’, that is, a future king from the house of David who would rescue the Jews from the lowly state of punishment to which Judah had fallen and establish a new Kingdom. The second reading emphasizes that our home is not this earthly tent we occupy but is in the eternal Kingdom of heaven. We are only passing through this earth as pilgrims. The heavenly Kingdom is our ultimate destination which we are hastening on our way to. In the gospel, we see that the ‘scattered seed’, that is, the preaching of the Good News of the Kingdom of God will unfailingly yield its fruit, independent of who sows or reaps. Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God while on earth and sent His disciples to do the same. Likewise, we are called today to continue with the work of Kingdom building. Let us, according to our vocation, establish the Kingdom of God on earth so that the seed of God’s Kingdom will grow to be a ‘big tree’; one which encompasses the whole world
