God's Ways Are Not Man's Ways
A thousand dollar bill has value to man, but to God it is simply a piece of paper. And even though God created logic and reason, God himself is not bound by logic and reason, nor by space and time. It is a great irony that to begin to "know" God, we first have to come to the point where we realise that we don't know him! That is the start of wisdom. The Jews thought they knew God, and that they could please Him by observing a set of man-made rules. But God does not need that. God is love and He trades in the spiritual currency of love. God gives us love in various forms -- in the food we eat, in our family and friends, and in the talents he endowed us with. The best way for us to "repay" God's love is not with candles, incense or flowers, all of which have their place in liturgy, but by loving others, by coming to the aid of orphans and widows, and by tending to the lowly and downtrodden. These are far more valuable in the eyes of God.
