In today’s gospel, Jesus mentions the acid test of our professed love & faith for Him; obeying His commandments. Are we observing His commandments, as Jesus would expect us to? Or are we still stumbling in our resolve to place Him as Lord & God of our lives? Earlier on, we read about the baptized Samaritans who only received the Holy Spirit after Peter & John had laid their hands on them. It’s important to recognize that acceptance of Christ (baptism) is a pre- requisite for receiving the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises his followers the Holy Spirit who functions as the Advocate, Teacher, Comforter & Helper. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can be strong & confident witnesses of Christ, living in holiness & always ready to give an explanation to anyone for the hope we have in Him. “And that we might live no longer for ourselves but for Him. He sent the Holy Spirit from You, Father, as His first Gift to those who believe, to complete His work on earth & bring us the fullness of grace.” (Eucharistic Prayer IV).
