Mixing Religion With Secular Matters
People often use religion to further their own causes. A businessman may give people the impression that the profits from the sale of his goods will go towards a charitable cause. Or a politician could put on a religious front to gain support from his constituents and further his own political ambitions. It is one thing to put gospel values into our work and actions. But it is a different thing altogether to twist religion to support our ulterior motives. Our intentions should be pure. Let our good works and alms giving always stem from our charity, and not from our desire for personal gain, or to be seen by others in a favourable light. God is a perfect judge; He sees not only our actions but the intentions of our heart. In the gospel passage, thecrowd defiled the temple because they were not there to worship God but for their personal gain. We would do well to remember that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit; we should never do anything to defile our bodies either through our words or actions
