What really matters
This week's parable sees the Son of Man qualifying the flock for entry into heaven. The sheep he placed on one side, and the goats on the other. The sheep are those who live authentic lives following the gospel values. The goats are not just evil people but also those who twist the gospel values to suit themselves and make them fall in line with their own values. The string of properties and the fat bank account we accumulate during our lifetime will not get us to heaven. Rather it is the people we helped along the way. The gospel cites the poor, the hungry, the thirsty and the prisoner. We recognise them today in the war refugees, the poor trapped in the countries suffering from Ebola, and migrant workers who are forced to work overseas in order to provide for their families. Many rich countries are pouring billions of dollars into projects not so much to benefit their people, but to fuel their pride. If we are charitable, God will bless us.
