22 January 2017 ( Third Sunday of Ordinary Time )

[Isaiah 8:23b–9:3] [1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17] [Matthew 4:12-23]

In today’s gospel reading, we read how Jesus fulfilled yet another Messianic prophesy by dwelling in the Land of Zebulun & Naphtali. There, by the Lake of Galilee, he called upon Peter, Andrew, James & John to follow him & be “fishers of men”. These persons eventually became part of the inner circle known as the “Apostles” who were responsible for spreading the gospel to both the Jews & Gentiles. As the seed of the gospel found fertile land in the hearts of many, communities of followers sprouted throughout the lands. News of division soon came to the ears of the apostles & elders, such as the one in today’s reading in Corinthians. Many of us serve in church because we are called to serve & there is a great need. Importantly, we know that we are fully accountable to our Lord Jesus for our service. Jesus’ plan for His Church is a community unified in the Faith. Let us remind ourselves then to be completely humble, patient, bearing with one another in love & to look out for the interest of His community that we serve in! (Ephesians 4:2-16).
