Come, Holy Spirit

8 June 2014 ( Pentecost Sunday )

[Acts 2:1-11] [1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13] [John 20:19-23]

The first reading describes how the Holy Spirit descended on the early Christians in wind, fire and speech. ‘They were all filled with the Holy Spirit’ (Acts 2:4) and were utterly transformed by the love and power of God. Instead of being timid and afraid, they became bold and eager to proclaim Jesus. The second reading emphasizes that when the Holy Spirit is moving in us, we will be able to say that ‘Jesus is Lord’. The influence of the Spirit will also be felt in the variety of gifts bestowed upon individuals for the service of the Church. The gospel shows Jesus breathing his Spirit on the apostles and sending them out to continue his mission. Regardless of opposition and persecution as we see in the lives of the apostles, they remained steadfast in their faith and in their fidelity to their mission. The Holy Spirit continues to be active in our daily lives and in the Church so that we will give witness before the world of what we have seen and heard. As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, we implore the coming of the Holy Spirit into our lives as we pray ‘Come, Holy Spirit.’
