Connected to the Family of Christ

Paul reiterates the sacrament of Marriage binding a man to a woman, and likening it to the relationship between Christ and the Church. The husband is the head of the household even as Christ is the head of the Church. Wives are exhorted to obey their husbands even as the Church is exhorted to obey Christ. And husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the Church. This is not to establish a relationship of domination and subjugation, but rather to assign different roles for the husband and wife to play in holding the family together, which is all part of God's plan. But a human family is only made of flesh-and-blood relationships, and this can only end up in death. In order to have eternal life, each family has to be connected to the larger family of Christ, with Christ as the head. And we have to eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ, which alone can secure our salvation. This is something many of Jesus' disciples, operating with their logical minds, could not accept and caused them to turn away from Jesus.
