Criteria for entry into heaven

21st Sunday of Ordinary Time
Who gets to go to heaven? Those who go to church every Sunday? Those who abstain from meat every Friday? Those who give a lot of money to the church? We may be in for a rude shock. The Jews in those days considered themselves the chosen people of God and took pains to fulfill the old Jewish laws. And they wanted to get Jesus to say that they would attain heaven. So they must have been flabbergasted when Jesus told them by way of a parable, that God may not recognise them. Jesus is saying that obeying the laws of the church is good. But obeying the law of charity is more important! We should not think that being Christian automatically qualifies us for heaven. Sometimes our external actions may appear good, but they are worthless unless they are motivated by love. For example, a son may obey his father not out of love but because he is eying his father inheritance. Remember that those now first will be last, and those now last will be first. Instead of judging non-Christians, let us simply practice our Christian charity.
