Don’t worry, God provides!

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The common message resonating through this week's readings is: Don't worry, God provides! We can all empathise with the plight of the prophet Elijah. In spite of his best efforts everything went wrong for him, and the people of God have turned to idols. He was tired and frustrated. And now he, himself, had to flee for his life. But through an angel, God provided him with bread and water to sustain him for the long journey ahead, which would take all of forty days and forty nights, a number signifying a “long haul” in Jewish terms. But that’s very much a reflection of what we go through in life. We all have our ups and downs, and there are stretches of time when we can’t seem to get anything done right. It is especially during those trying times that we need to rely on Jesus, the bread of Life, to see us through. But while we know that bread can sustain us physically, we need to operate on the faith level to believe that this wafer of the Holy Eucharist can sustain us through life’s problems.
