19 March 2017 ( Third Sunday of Lent )

[Exodus 17:3-7] [Romans 5:1-2, 5-8] [John 4:5-42]

The first reading was prophetic in showing us what was to come through Jesus. It spoke of people thirsting in the wilderness and of their thirst being quenched by the water that came out from the rock struck by Moses with his staff. Moses was presented as a type of Christ, both of them providing water to the people. Water is symbolic of the Holy Spirit and we are told in the second reading that by the power of the Holy Spirit that has been given to us through Christ, the love of God has been poured into our hearts. This divine love assures salvation to those justified by faith in Jesus. The gospel echoes the first reading with Jesus promising to give us water that will become in us ‘a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.’ When we drink of this water of life, we will never ever be thirsty again as the source of the living water, Christ himself, lives in us through the Holy Spirit that He has breathed upon us. So let us all who have been baptized by the one Spirit, continually drink of the life-giving Spirit that we too may bring life to others and so complete the work of God.
