Follow In Christ’s Footsteps

12th Sunday of Ordinary Time
The prophetic nature of the first reading can be seen when inspired by the Holy Spirit, the prophet Zechariah foretold the piercing of the Lord Jesus and the mourning of Him by many in Jerusalem. This prophecy pointed to Jesus as a descendant of the House of David. The second reading reminds us that in Christ, we have become children of God. We are of Abraham’s spiritual seed and counted among the endless number of believers who have embraced the God of Abraham through faith in Jesus. The gospel highlights the identity of Jesus, the Messiah. He is ‘the Anointed One’ destined to suffer, die and rise from the dead. We are called on to renounce ourselves, take up our cross daily and follow this Jesus. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are now the sons and daughters of God the Father in Jesus and we are given the grace by God to follow in Christ’s footsteps and the strength to do so for the glory of God.
