God draws all people to Himself

In the first reading, we learn of God’s promise of a new covenant. He would place within us a new heart and spirit where we would become His people and He would be our God. We become the living temples of His Holy Spirit who helps us to obey His laws. The second reading teaches us, through the example of Jesus, how we must respond to God’s call that draws us to Him. In his human nature, Jesus learnt obedience through suffering and was made perfect and became the source of salvation for all who obey Him. For us too, through suffering, our souls are sanctified and we become more in the likeness of Christ. Today’s gospel reading reaffirms that in baptism, our old sinful nature dies and is buried with Christ and a new creation is raised from death to walk the new life received through Christ. God draws all people to Himself out of darkness into His light. We are called to follow Him and bear much fruit so that like Him, our souls may shine as a light in the world.
