20 March 2016 (Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord)

[Isaiah 50:4-7] [Philippians 2:6-11] [Luke 22:14-23,56]

God highly exalted Jesus

The reading from Luke showed the entry of Jesus in Jerusalem on a colt where He was proclaimed as the King of the people. The reading from the book of Isaiah spoke of the suffering servant who willingly bore the strikes, insult and spitting. This is unlike the promised Messiah the people were expecting. The reading from St Paul’s letter to the Philippians highlighted Jesus emptying himself and taking the form of a slave. He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death on a cross, fulfilling the account of the suffering Messiah in the book of Isaiah. The gospel reading on the passion of Jesus told us that the people, some of whom had welcomed Jesus earlier in Jerusalem, were shouting ‘Crucify, crucify him!’

This sudden change of heart was because they were expecting a worldly kingdom and a King who would lead them to war against their oppressors.

But God highly exalted Jesus whose perfect sacrifice on the cross brought life to the world.
