In the first reading, we see God’s promise of the coming heavenly kingdom. To David and his line is promised endless rule, the basis of all future hope for a Messiah. From David’s offspring, God would establish His kingdom forever. In the second reading, St Paul speaks of the proclamation of Jesus Christ for through Him, the salvation of mankind has come to all, the Jews and the Gentiles. The kingdom of God has come on earth as it is in heaven. Through Jesus, we find the complete fulfilment of God’s promise to the prophets. How did all this come to pass? Through the incarnation of Jesus whose birth and eternal kingdom were announced by the angel Gabriel to Mary as seen in the gospel of Luke. With Mary’s complete trust and obedience to the divine will, God’s promise is fulfilled. On Christmas Day, let us commemorate the arrival of Jesus in the world as the promised Messiah to establish His divine kingdom in fulfilment of God’s promise.
