29 June 2014 ( Sts Peter & Paul, Apostles )

[Act 12:1-11] [2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18] [Matthew 16:13-19]

The first reading describes the arrest of St Peter at a time of persecution of the early Christians by King Herod and his rescue from prison by an angel sent by the Lord. The second reading mentions St Paul’s good fight right to the end and his race to the finish. Through all his difficulties, the Lord has stood by St Paul and given him power to proclaim God’s message to the pagans. The gospel relates how St Peter was able to recognize that Jesus is the Son of the living God through the revelation of our Father in heaven. He had been chosen as the rock upon which the Church was built. Though very different in personalities, both these Saints had very important tasks in the early church maintaining the unity in the church and preaching the gospel to the Jews and the Gentiles. Like them, our talents and our weaknesses can also become God’s means of helping others to come to the faith. God can work through us, faults and all, as He did with Ss Peter and Paul.
