[Isaiah 35:4-7a][James 2:1-5][Mark 7:31-37]

From the first reading we ask: Who would be saved? Why would God come with vengeance?

The Lord’s vengeance was not against the people but against the spiritual forces, against Satan and his legions of fallen angels. Jesus in His incarnation has come to reclaim God’s kingdom from the prince of darkness. He has come to deliver all His people from their exile as slaves of sin.

In Jesus, we have become a new creation with eyes that see and ears that hear. With a spiritual heart, we perceive what is mentioned in the second reading that God has no favourites.

He has chosen the poor to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom established by Jesus and promised to those who love Him. The gospel reading shows Jesus miraculously healing a deaf man with a speech impediment. Not only has Jesus physically healed the man, He has shown that God’s kingdom is at hand. Let us reflect on the words of the crowd when they said of Jesus, “He has done all things well.” (Mark 7:37).
