7 May 2017 Fourth Sunday of Easter ( Good Shepherd Sunday )

[Acts 2:14a,31-42] [1 Peter 2:20b–25] [John 10:1-10]

In the book of Acts, we see Peter emboldened by the Holy Spirit, urging the crowd to turn away from their sins, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and to receive the Holy Spirit. Later on, Peter encouraged the faithful to endure suffering even when they are not at fault. He cited Jesus as an example, who though acceptance of his sufferings and death of the cross, has become our Shepherd and keeper of our souls. In today’s Gospel, we are again reminded by Jesus himself that He is the Good Shepherd who knows us intimately and has called us by name. We will find guidance, redemption and true peace in him. It is crucial that we, as his sheep, hear his voice and follow the path of holiness set forth by him. We do this with the help of the Holy Spirit and encountering Jesus through prayer, fasting, Holy Scriptures and the sacraments. Disastrous consequences awaits us if we fail to heed his voice; we will end up getting caught by the malicious Thief who comes with the sole intention to steal, kill, and destroy souls.
