Jesus’ most earnest prayer for his disciples

If a dear friend from overseas, whom you have not seen in years, comes over to stay with you for a week, you will surely spend time catching up with each other's lives and have some interesting conversations over the period he is with you. But the most interesting, the most intimate, and the most important conversation you are likely to have is during your last few moments with him, maybe at the airport -- before he leaves for good. In today's gospel, as Jesus is preparing to ascend to heaven, what is in his heart? Jesus is happy to be returning to the Father, of course, but at the same time he is anxious for the flock he is leaving behind. His prayer to his heavenly Father is to keep his disciples safe from harm and consecrate them in the light of truth so that they will remain focused and not be misled by evil forces. But mostly, his prayer is for his disciples to remain united in love and in faith so that one day, by extension, they may live in perfect union with God.
