Justice Tempered By Mercy

Third Sunday of Lent
Some people are quick to judge, and they would see what they want to see. When a tragedy happens to another person, they would say that God is punishing them because they are bad. At the same time they are not prepared to take a hard look at their own miserable lives. Just because a tragedy had not taken place in their own life, they think they are fine. The parable of the fig tree gives us a hint of the character and thinking of God. For years, the vinedresser (representing Jesus), had tended to the fig tree, and for years it did not bear the fruit it was supposed to bear. The owner of the vineyard (representing our heavenly Father), noted that the tree was useless and was taking up space. Under such circumstances, the reasonable thing to do was to cut it down and replace it with one that would bear fruit. But the vinedresser said to give it another chance. Our God is patient and merciful. We should never take that for granted because at some point, God's mercy has to give way to His Justice.
