The first reading shows how Abraham’s living faith was tested by God. The action of Abraham shows perfect obedience and a sincere heart towards God. It also highlights that living faith without action is dead. True faith is living faith that shines in actions. From the second reading, we learn that perseverance moves alongside living faith. Addressing the converts in the early church who were persecuted, St Paul encouraged them that God is on the side of Christians and there is nothing to fear. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. A heavenly reward awaits all those who persevere in their living faith. Today’s gospel reading offers us a glimpse of the glory that awaits us as seen in the transfiguration of Jesus. The dazzling white clothing is an image of glory. The presence of Elijah and Moses on the mountain is a symbolic fulfilment of the prophets and the Law. Their presence is proof that God’s children of the Old Testament who persevered in the living faith have inherited the Kingdom of God. We thus have the hope that living faith and perseverance leads us to eternal glory.
