2 February 2014 ( Presentation of the Lord )

[Malachi 3:1-4] [Hebrews 2:14-18] [Luke 2:22-40]

Presenting the first-born male child to the high priest at the temple is one of the many rituals Jewish families go through. Mary and Joseph as prescribed by the law presented the baby Jesus at the temple. At that time there was a man named Simeon who is described as an upright and devout man filled with the Holy Spirit. It was revealed to him that he will not die before he sees the saviour who would bring about the restoration of Israel. It was the Holy Spirit in him make him recognize in the in the baby Jesus the long-awaited Messiah. Today we, too, have our beautiful rituals in the church. Like the old Jewish families we, too, sometimes go through the motion of the rituals simply to fulfill our religious obligations. Rituals can be simply boring ceremonials. But when we engage the Holy Spirit we will, like Simeon, be able to see, to touch and to be in communion with Jesus the Lord.
