Make our family holy

The readings today revolve around the theme of family life. In the first reading, Sirach advocates respect and honour to our parents (4th commandment) to atone for sins and merit divine favours. In the second reading, St Paul addresses everyone to clothe themselves with the attributes of Christ especially love and instructs each member of the family according to their roles. All these will bring about harmonious family life. Like our families, the Holy Family also went through tensions, conflicts and crises as shown in the infancy narratives. In the gospel, we see them fulfilling the Law of Moses in presenting Jesus to the Lord in the temple. When confronted with the prophecies about Jesus’ destiny, they could only wonder at the pain and suffering that is to come. In facing this reality, they contribute to the making of redemptive history in their respective roles. As we celebrate this feast day, let us look into our own family and make concrete resolutions on what we need to do to make our family happier, simpler and holier.
