Mary's Greatness, A Reflection Of God's Greatness

Feast of the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary
From the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. That was what happened at Mary's joyful encounter with her cousin Elizabeth. Mary was dying to tell Elizabeth the news that she was pregnant with Jesus. It was this overflow of joy in her heart which gave rise to the beautiful prayer of praise by Mary, which we have come to know as the Memorare. With Mary, there was no room for false humility. To deny the wonderful things that were happening to her was to deny the goodness of God. Mary was a virtuous Jewish girl who was dedicated to the Lord, but she did nothing spectacular as to earn the honour of being the mother of Jesus. That honour was given purely at the pleasure of God. The greatness of Mary lie not so much in the things she did, but in the fact that she put herself completely at the disposal of God. She made God's desire, her own desire. Mary was not perfect in herself, but perhaps it could be said that she aligned herself to the will of God more perfectly than anyone else.
