5 October 2014 ( 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time )
Like the master of the vineyard, God gave the people of Israel his love and friendship, and a beautiful vineyard to tend. Look at this beautiful earth, full of natural resources and beautiful creatures. Look at the friends and family he surrounds us with, all this to beautify our lives. But like the tenants in the parable, who rejected God’s gifts and loving offer of friendship and many of us go as far to betray his love. God laments “What more could I do for my people than I have done?” God’s love is strong and enduring, so he proceeds to send his only beloved Son, hoping and longing for his people’s respect, honour and love. However, his Son is tortured and killed. Like a loving forgiving parent, God forgives his people yet again, and chose to use his Son’s tragic death to give new life to his people. Instead of vengeance, God chose to outdo the hatred by an overwhelming outpouring of his Holy Spirit upon them. Brothers and sisters, where else could we find such perfect love?
