Preparation for the storm

The Transfiguration is a key event in the Bible, which took place just before Jesus would be taken by the Romans to Jerusalem be interrogated, tortured and crucified. Jesus had gone up to the mountain to pray. He brought three of his disciples -- Peter, James and John -- with him. At that point, Jesus needed reassurance from his heavenly Father that what was taking place, and what was about to take place, was in line with His will. But the Transfiguration was also for the benefit of the three disciples, who represent the rest of mankind. They, too, needed reassurance, but for a different reason. They needed to see the glow come over Jesus and to hear the voice of the Father saying, "This is my Son, the chosen one. Listen to him" because that experience would sustain their faith later on during the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. Important as the event was, the disciples almost missed it because they were "heavy with sleep". We, too, need to "stay awake" and constantly pray for the faith which we will need when we encounter our own moments of trial.
