Seek God First

2 March 2014 ( Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time )

[Isaiah 49:14-15] [1 Corinthians 4:1-5] [Matthew 6:24-34]

In the first reading, we have the image of God as a compassionate mother who comforts and consoles her children. God is seen as faithful and committed to provide for the needs of His children who feel abandoned and neglected in exile. The second reading reminds us that God’s disciples are called to be ‘stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God’. As we reflect on this call, are our hearts truly with God? Are we faithful servants of Christ worthy of His trust in us? The gospel of Matthew shows our ‘heavenly Father’ providing for us like a mother, feeding and clothing. We are encouraged to trust our faithful God to take care of all our concerns and daily needs just as a child who relies completely on his parents. The priority is thus for us to set our hearts on God’s kingdom first and not be distracted by the things and the worries of the world. Are we able to seek God first so that ‘all these other things will be given’?
