Taking A Stand Requires Courage

Edmund Burke said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Pilate has heard about Jesus and the good works he has been doing. That alone should have informed him that this man was different from the rest of the crowd baying for his blood. But Pilate didn’t have the spine or the moral conviction to do the right thing. Faced with the choice of doing what was right and what was popular, Pilate went with the demands of the unthinking and unreasonable crowd. Today, we see all kinds of lobby groups pushing for change in society. Some, like the demands for abortion and same-sex marriage run against our conscience. As Christians, how do we react? Do we, like Pilate, wash our hands and say this involves other people and does not concern us personally?
Or do we take a conscionable stand for what is right and good for the public?
To be sure there is a price to pay for taking a stand.
But unless more people are willing to step out and do the right thing, evil will surely prevail.
