The Coming Of The Lord Jesus

The first reading today announced the arrival of the promised Messiah. Until such a time as the woman in labour has brought forth the child, Israel would remain subject to other nations. But the Saviour would deliver the people of God from their oppressors and unite them as one. In the second reading, we see that the coming of Christ into the world would put an end to the Old Covenant under the Laws of Moses and to the imperfect sacrifices and offerings; the burnt offerings and sin offerings. The New and Everlasting Covenant made perfect through the sacrifice of Christ would be established forever. The gospel reading shows that upon meeting her cousin Mary, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy. Elizabeth herself was also filled with the Holy Spirit to express great joy at the coming of the blessed one, the fruit of Mary’s womb. As we eagerly wait in anticipation for the coming of the Lord Jesus, let us rejoice that we will have life through him.
