The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

Jesus insisted on being baptized, despite being sinless. Jesus submits to the rite to identify with us, sinners, and to align Himself with God’s plan. John’s baptism was a sign of repentance and the forgiveness of sins. Jesus wanted to be in fellowship with us, but at the same time show that in joining us, Jesus brought us into His family. Just as the Holy Spirit appeared during our Lord’s baptism, the Holy Spirit rested on us during our Sacrament of Baptism, so that we are equipped to carry on Christ’s mission. That is, to leave our old self behind and come out of the water renewed in spirit as God’s witness, to follow His commandments, to fight injustice for the weakest in our community, to free the oppressed, to feed the hungry, to quench the thirsty, to love all with all our being. We are God’s beloved children so God’s favour rests on us. It is time to leave behind all our past earthly attachments that do not bring us closer to fulfilling our true mission.
