The gift of eternal life

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s readings speak of the gift of eternal life. The first reading shows that we are created in the image of God to inherit His Kingdom. Those who live a life of righteousness are destined for immortality in the Kingdom of God. In the second reading, we see that Jesus came, not as an earthly king, but as a common man, living in poverty throughout his life on earth and gave everything that we might receive the inheritance of eternal life. Today’s gospel tells us that Jesus reached out to Jairus, the synagogue leader, who had faith in Him and raised his daughter. He gave life to the little girl who had crossed over to death, just as He had done so for his friend Lazarus. It shows that Jesus has the power to raise all the living dead and to grant eternal life in the Kingdom of God to those He chooses. Let us therefore live our Christian life with the blessed hope that one day we will inherit the gift of eternal life promised to those who have faith in Jesus.
