The Humble Will Be Exalted

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
One of the best places to observe body language and social habits is at a dinner party. There you will see all kinds of people -- the good, the bad and the ugly. Jesus referred in particular to the ones who went straight for the best seats in the hall. It could be that they were selfish or plain unaware. Whichever the case, if a VIP had been invited, the host might have had to tell them to give up their seat. That would be embarrassing not only for the inconsiderate guest, but for the host as well. In a social situation, it is always good for us to underplay our importance, and give the host the chance to honour us with a higher position. The other point Jesus makes is about choosing our friends. We tend to choose those who are rich, important or who benefit us in some way. Perhaps that's natural. But Jesus challenges us to reach out to the poor and the outcasts of society who do not benefit us in any way. Because that is the true test of Christian charity.
