The Lord in our midst

3rd Sunday of Advent
Today’s readings highlight the glory that is associated with the arrival of the Messiah on earth. In the first reading, the people of Zion were told to rejoice and exult for the Lord is in her midst and there is no need to fear being abandoned any more. The Lord will sing over Zion and rejoice because of her. In the second reading, St Paul encouraged the people with the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. There is no cause for them to worry but instead to rejoice because the Lord is near. The gospel reading shows John the Baptist proclaiming the good news to the people with many other exhortations. He had been telling the crowds of the coming of the Saviour. To their questions of what the coming of the Messiah would ask of them, he simply told them to act with justice and charity. Let us do whatever is necessary to welcome the coming One who will baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire as we look forward to the Lord in our midst.
