The Holy Spirit Makes Us New Creations Of God

Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, and is regarded as the birthday of the church. Before Jesus ascended into heaven he told his apostles two things. First, he was going back to heaven to prepare a place for them. And second, to do nothing but wait until they received the Holy Spirit. Time must have stood still for the apostles during those nine long days (the church's first "novena") between Ascension and Pentecost. It must have crossed their minds more than a few times whether Jesus was for real. Were all the lofty things he said about this "kingdom of God" true? Were the three years they spent with him a waste of time? But when the Holy Spirit finally came down on them, everything fell into place. Suddenly all the hard teaching of Jesus became possible because they were no longer trying to understand the things of God with their small minds, but running on grace. The Holy Spirit enabled them to call God "Abba!" -- "Daddy!". Now they were ready to witness for Christ to the ends of the earth.
