[Sirach 15:15-20] [1 Corinthians 2:6-10] [Matthew 5:17-37]

What is true freedom? Today’s readings point us to the true meaning of what it means to be free in Christ. The first reading taken from the book of Ecclesiasticus reminds us that we have every advantage because of our free will to make the right choices with God in mind through careful thought and prayer. God’s eyes as Ecclesiasticus says are on those who fear him. St Paul in his letter to the Corinthians centers on the theme of wisdom and says that God’s wisdom is hidden and mysterious hinging on the person of Christ crucified. To those willing to seek this wisdom and love the law of Christ through the Holy Spirit , no eye has seen, no ear has heard what God has ready for those who love him. In today’s Gospel we see Jesus admonishing the Scribes and the Pharisees for not adhering to the spirit of the foundation of the Law and just merely observing its external formality. Jesus however sees the interior; he looks all the way in to our hearts and he knows our deepest motivations and desires; he is the Wisdom of God.
