29 January 2017 ( Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time )

[Zephaniah 2, 3:3,12-13] [1 Corinthians 1:26-31] [Matthew 5:1–12a]

"Poor in spirit" means humility; the realisation that all blessings come from God; to be completely open to the Word of God. Mourning is a blessing, because mourning our fallen nature creates a desire to improve ourselves. Importantly, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, will heal & strengthen our hearts. A humble person becomes meek & exhibits self-control, even in adversity. A continuous desire for justice & moral perfection will lead one to a conversion & fulfilment of holiness. Remember the Lord’s prayer; As we are merciful to others, so will our Heavenly Father be merciful with us. To be pure of heart means to seek God’s will & be free of all selfish & self-seeking desires. To be a peacemaker, you’ll need to be filled first with God’s peace. Only then can you can pass it to others who need it. Finally, if you have to suffer for Jesus; rejoice! It shows that God’s spirit is on you & your reward will be great in Heaven. The Beatitudes represent the ideals of Christian life. Certainly, it requires a top priority commitment to Christ & the help of his Holy Spirit!
