Where to look for God

There are people who would go to lengths to get that experience of God. They are prepared to go for retreats, back-to-back devotions, even pilgrimage tours to holy shrines. In this week's reading from the Book of Kings, we see Elijah looking for God in the hurricane; but it passed by and God was not in it. Likewise with the earthquake and the fire; they, too, passed by and God was not in them. Then in the stillness that followed, Elijah felt the overwhelming presence of God. Next, in the gospel passage we see the disciples of Jesus in a boat in the middle of the lake, battling a raging storm. Out of nowhere, Jesus appears walking on the choppy waters. What a contrast! Where can we find God when we need Him? In the quiet of our hearts? Or in dramatic events? God is present wherever and whenever we need Him. He knows our deepest problems and desires, and meets us where we're at. In fact, God is the one who comes looking for us. All we need to do is to attune ourselves to His presence.
